4 Important Steps to Maintain Ear Health

Ears are one of the five senses that must be kept healthy. The older you get, the more your ears can hear.

Some things that can be done to maintain ear health are:


1. Clean your ears the right way


You may think that you should clean your ears regularly with a cotton swab. 


In fact, you are not advised to insert a cotton bud or something else into the ear to clean the ear. Inserting a cotton swab into the ear actually risks pushing earwax into the ear.


In addition, inserting something into the ear cavity also risks damaging sensitive organs in the ear, such as the eardrum.


Then, how to clean the ears? The ear is an organ that can clean itself. A wax-like liquid that is in the ear serves to prevent the entry of dust and other harmful particles into the ear. So, the function of this waxy fluid is very important for ear health and the presence of earwax is normal.


2. Protect your ears from loud noise


The function of the ear is to hear. However, the ear has the capacity to hear sound. Not all sounds fall into the safe category for the ear to hear. Too often exposed to loud noises, can make your ability to hear reduced.


The source of this loud sound can vary, for example from your work environment, from the music you listen to, and so on. To keep your ears healthy, you need to do the following:


If your work environment is always noisy, such as when cutting grass, using power tools that make noise, and so on, you should use ear protection.


Do not listen to two loud sound sources at the same time. This can actually damage your hearing. For example, when someone is cleaning the house with a vacuum cleaner that makes a lot of noise, don't turn up the volume of the television or even listen to loud music.

3. Keep your ears dry


Ears that are always wet or excessive ear humidity can allow bacteria to enter the ear canal. This can lead to an infection in the ear called swimmer's ear or otitis externa. Swimmer's ear is an outer ear infection caused by water trapped in the ear canal, trapping bacteria.


In warm and humid environments, these bacteria multiply, causing irritation and infection of the ear canal.


Therefore, make sure your ears are always dry. If you like swimming, it's a good idea to use earplugs for swimming to prevent water from getting into your ears.


If you feel water entering your ear, immediately tilt your head and pull the earlobe to stimulate the water to escape. Don't forget, to always dry your ears with a dry towel after every swim and also after every shower, this is important.


4. Do regular ear examinations to the doctor


Having your ears checked by a doctor is important, especially as you get older. Hearing loss develops gradually, so you need to make sure your ears are healthy at all times.


You will need to have an initial hearing test to be able to measure and take action any time you have a hearing loss. An ear exam is also done to make sure there is no earwax buildup in the ear. If so, your ears may need cleaning.
